François Soumis

Sincere thanks to OBVIA (International Observatory on the Societal Impacts of AI and Digital Technology) for awarding a $125k grant for the project to study the governance and ethics of algorithms in an environment of mobility on demand and of an innovation ecosystem. The team (Andrea Lodi, Antoine Legrain, François Soumis, and Hugues Delmaire) to which is added researchers Patrick Turmel from Université Laval, Vincent Gautrais from Université de Montréal and Sébastien Gambs from UQAM, must study the impact of social, legal, security factors ... on the performance and structure of algorithms in a real-time environment requiring the management of large amounts of data. An important step in the development of technically and socially viable solutions.

Two scholarships of $10 000 each respectively will be attributed to:

  • Kwassi Joseph Dzahini, Ph.D. student, cosupervised by Sébastien Le Digabel and Michael Kokkolaras;
  • Alice Wu, M.Sc. student, cosupervised by François Soumis and Issmail El Hallaoui.

On May 4th, Samuel Rosat and Amir Ardestani Jaafari won the 2016 GERAD Best Thesis Competition.

Samuel Rosat for his thesis titled "Méthodes pour favoriser l'intégralité de l'amélioration dans le simplexe en nombres entiers - Application aux rotations d'équipages aériens". He was supervised by François Soumis and Issmail El Hallaoui at Polytechnique Montréal.

Amir Ardestani Jaafari for his thesis titled "Linearized robust counterparts of location and inventory management problems". He was supervised by Erick Delage at HEC Montréal.

Mr. Samuel Rosat receives the Best Thesis Award from the Department of Mathematics and Industrial Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal, and the Roger-A. Blais Award of $2,000 for his thesis titled: "Méthodes pour favoriser l'intégralité de l'amélioration dans le simplexe en nombres entiers - Application aux rotations d'équipages aériens". The work of Mr. Rosat was supervised by Professors François Soumis and Issmail El Hallaoui from the Department of Mathematics and Industrial Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal.
