Extension of input-output functions for generating units allows simultaneous solution of the static unit commitment and economic dispatch problems by dynamic programming. Computing time to do so is almost the same as for solving the economic dispatch problem alone. With effective programming, it is moderate even for large instances. Moreover, forbidden production zones due to cavitation or vibration are easily taken into account, as well as transmission losses and spinning reserve constraints. Results are given for a 72 unit problem from the literature and a real 36 unit problem.
