Diagonal quasi-Newton updating methods for large-scale nonlinear least squares

We propose some diagonal Hessian approximations of the least-squares nonlinear function. We use suitable diagonal matrices that carry some information of the quasi-Newton condition and/or the specific structure of the least-squares function. It is shown that the proposed methods perform well when used to solve a collection of standard test problems.
