5G is a complex set of technologies that is drastically changing the way telecommunication networks operate. It also has the potential to greatly influence everyday life, as many “smart” systems will heavily depend on it. The strength of 5G comes from its great technological flexibility that was induced by the need for the technology to deal with very different types of applications. However, that flexibility can also bring some important performance, reliability and sustainability challenges. In this talk, we will first review some important elements that characterize the 5G architecture, before explaining why they bring problems that are more challenging in 5G than in previous wireless generations. Next, we will present our current research on those problems.
