We learned with regret of the death of Jean Louis Goffin, one of the founding members of GERAD and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Management Sciences at McGill University.
Born in Belgium, he began his studies at the University of California at Berkeley. After graduating, he joined the Faculty of Management at McGill University in 1976 and was also an adjunct professor in the Department of Mathematics at McGill University. He also participated in the founding of GERAD in 1979, of which he was still an honorary member until his death.
He has obtained numerous NSERC grants which have funded many master's and doctoral students throughout his career.
Jean-Louis Goffin has taught undergraduate and graduate courses, notably in operations research, applied optimization, simulation of management systems, data and decision models and operations management. His original research continues to be cited in journals to this day.
His work has been published in journals such as Management Science, Mathematical Programming, Mathematics of Operations Research, Contemporary Accounting Research, SIAM Journal on Optimization, Discrete Applied Mathematics, European Journal of Operations Research, Operations Research Letters, Linear Algebra and its Applications, Computational Optimization and Applications, Mathematical Methods of Operations Research and Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications.
