Quick and (not so) Dirty Applications of Optimization in Large Scale Energy Models
Richard Loulou, GERAD, Université McGill, 3000, chemin de la Côte-Sainte-Catherine, Montréal, Québec, Canada, H3T 2A7

The author will draw from more than 20 years of experience with building and running large scale Energy-Economics models in order to present a number of theoretical, heuristic, and algorithmic optimization approaches to answer specific modeling needs. The methods are often heuristic ones, as the large size of the models often precludes using rigorous optimization techniques. The examples used for the presentation are drawn from recent applications of the TIMES family of models as well as their conjoint use with general equilibrium models. The presentation will focus on the practical value of the various approaches or lack thereof.
