Mixed-Integer Optimization for Air Traffic Deconfliction

Sonia Cafieri École Nationale de l’Aviation Civile (ENAC), France

When aircraft sharing the same airspace are "too close" to each other according to their predicted trajectories, they are said to be potentially in conflict. The problem of detecting and solving these conflicts is evidently crucial in Air Traffic Management to guarantee air traffic safety. We present recent advances in the modeling and solution of aircraft deconfliction via mixed-integer nonlinear optimization. We propose in particular new models based on speed regulation, where conflicts are avoided allowing aircraft to only accelerate or decelerate in a time window, keeping their trajectory unchanged.
