Optimal Collision Avoidance of Operational Spacecraft in Near Real Time

The Optimal Collision Avoidance (COLA) problem is concerned with determining an operational strategy to enable personnel at the Joint Space Operations Center (JSpOC) to minimize the risk of collisions between satellites and space debris, by altering satellite trajectories. This talk will describe recent research undertaken jointly with graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Colorado Denver to assist the Colorado-based aerospace company SpaceNav in formulating a tractable optimization model for this problem and to develop algorithms to make recommendations for collision avoidance maneuvers in real time.
