Product design and process technology choices for recycling under extended producer responsibility regulation

Luyi Gui Paul Merage School of Business, University of California at Irvine, États-Unis

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a policy tool that holds producers financially responsible for proper recycling of their products at end of life. In practice, the environmental and economic effectiveness of the implementation of EPR legislation hinges on the complementarity between product design for recyclability and recycling technology choices. Observing that the existing literature has paid little attention to this design-technology dependency, we adopt game theory and co-development models to study joint design for recyclability and recycling technology choices under EPR.
