An application driven approach to data analytics and decision support: The ZIB perspective on data science

Thorsten Koch Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB), Technische Universität Berlin, Allemagne

The Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) is an interdisciplinary research institute for applied mathematics and data-intensive high-performance computing. Its research focuses on modeling, simulation and optimization with scientific cooperation partners from academia and industry. ZIB is now working together with industry partners for over 20 years on challenging real-world projects trying to bridge the gap between world-class academic research and industrial practice. In 2002 ZIB was one of the founding member of the DFG Research Center Matheon "Mathematics for key technologies" and in 2012 it was chosen by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research to be funded as a "Research Campus" to work on long term academic-industrial collaborations during the next 10 to 15 years. ZIB is part of the "Berlin Big Data Center" (BBDC) consortium. BBDC is one of just two competence centers for intelligent handling of huge amount of data in Germany. And just recently the new Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF) has been conceived in Berlin as an inter-university nucleus for research on the digitalization of our society. Research will focus on core IT fields like digital infrastructure, methods and algorithms, but also in digital health, digital society and humanities as well as digital industry and services. In this talk we will try to explain how all these initiatives fit together, what the place of ZIB is, and the view on it from the perspective of the Mathematical Optimization department.
