New Approaches to Improving the Robustness of Airline Schedules

The impact of disruptions (primarily delays and cancellations) on airlines and passengers can be significant. The traditional re-active approach to improving operational robustness is to re-optimize operations each time a disruption occurs. A more pro-active approach is to design airline schedules that naturally isolate or dampen the impact of disruptions. In this talk, I will present and discuss ideas and models for improving schedule robustness and show through simulation how a robust schedule can improve operational performance.
