Multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) is a field that was developed by engineers to tackle design problems involving the various disciplines that must be considered in aircraft design. As MDO evolved, it became clear that its principles are broadly applicable and it is now used in many other fields of engineering. Recently, MDO has caught the attention of applied mathematicians, who have contributed to the development of MDO methods. The first objective of this seminar is to explain what MDO is and connect the various concepts to optimization theory. The second objective is to describe the various MDO methods in a unified mathematical framework. On the more applied side, various applications to aerospace engineering will be presented. Finally, current challenges and future research directions will be identified and discussed.
