We will present and discuss some of the operational research problems that arise in today’s and tomorrow’s optical networks. In particular, we will go through various optimization problems that are currently studied for an efficient design, planning and management of WDM and DWDM optical networks. Very often those problems are either too large (size) or with a highly combinatorial structure that prevent exact solution for real size problems. However, exact methods are useful in order to get performance evaluation of the heuristics. Sometimes, additional metrics must be developed in order to estimate the quality of the heuristic solutions when exact methods fails to even provide lower or upper bounds of good quality.
