  • Mar 24, 2009 - Opening of a competition for two half post doctoral GERAD research fellowships of $17000 Canadian each.
    During the 2009-2010 fiscal exercise, GERAD will offer two half post doctoral research fellowships of $17000 Canadian each at the end of an internal competition.

    Candidate proposals must be presented together with letters of support and candidate CV's together with copies of up to 3 publications, by one or more members of GERAD who then in effect commit to completing the fellowships using other funds, if the candidate they propose is retained by the center’s selection committee.

  • Mar 04, 2009 - GERAD Professors Win the 2009 ROADEF Challenge
    A team of three HEC Montréal professors, of which two members of the GERAD, Jean François Cordeau, Canada Research Chair in Logistics and Transportation, and Gilbert Laporte, Canada Research Chair in Distribution Management, as well as a CIRRELT analyst won the 2009 ROADEF Challenge among 29 teams from 15 countries.

    The ROADEF Challenge is a biennial international competition dedicated to industrial applications. A decision-making problem to be solved: managing disruptions in the aviation industry. Organized by the Société française de recherche opérationnelle et d’aide à la décision, the ROADEF Challenge looks at the development of optimization tools for industrial problem solving.

    Pierre Hansen, holder of the Data Mining Chair, and GERAD member, received the 2008 Jacques-Rousseau Award (multidisciplinarity) from the ACFAS. This award was presented at the ACFAS gala held on October 16, 2008, in Montreal.

    This award salutes exceptional scientific achievements by individuals or teams having far exceeded their field of specialization and created new bridges between different disciplines.

    Diane Riopel, Department of Mathematical and Industrial Engineering, École Polytechnique de Montréal, and GERAD member, has just published with Clément Croteau, linguist-terminologist at the Office québécois de la langue française, a “Dictionnaire illustré des activités de l’entreprise”  at the Presses Internationales Polytechnique.     Tuyva Chan who graduated in 2007 from the MSc in Administration program, Logistics option, codirected by Gilbert Laporte and Jean-François Cordeau, received the Progistix National Student Paper Award by the Supply Chain and Logistics Association Canada (SCL) for a paper based on her thesis “La localisation d'usines satellites dans le domaine forestier : une étude de cas”, at the organization’s annual conference, held from May 4 to 6 in Toronto.

    In 2007, Al Gore and the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change) were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change". As a member of IPCC, Professor Richard Loulou, a GERAD member and ex director of GERAD, has received the following testimony by Mr. R.K. Pachauri, Chairman.

  • Dec 07, 2007 - Gilbert Laporte Wins the Innis-Gérin Medal
    Gilbert Laporte, holder of the Canada Research Chair in Distribution Management, and GERAD member, received the 2007 Innis-Gérin Medal from the Royal Society of Canada (RSC).

    Awarded for a distinguished and sustained contribution to the social sciences, the medal was presented to Professor Laporte at a banquet held as part of the annual general meeting of the RSC on November 17, in Edmonton.

  • Nov 21, 2007 - A best Ph.D. thesis award for a GERAD’s student
    Anne Mercier, a Ph.D. student directed by François Soumis, École Polytechnique de Montréal and GERAD, received the 2007 Best dissertation prize from the Aviation Applications Section of INFORMS, for her thesis entitled "Méthodes de décomposition pour la planification intégrée des itinéraires d'avions et des rotations d'équipages". This year, nine theses from all around the world were in competition for this high level contest.

    Gilbert Laporte, holder of the Canada Research Chair in Distribution Management, and GERAD member, received the 2007 Roger-Charbonneau Award for the book entitled Transportation, written with Cynthia Barnhart.

    This award recognizes the quality of an educational handbook published over the year by a professor of HEC Montréal.

  • Nov 12, 2007 - Vašek Chvátal wins the 2007 Frederick W. Lanchester Prize
    Vašek Chvátal, holder of the Canada Research Chair in Combinatorial Optimization at Concordia University, and GERAD member, has received the 2007 Frederick W. Lanchester Prize from INFORMS.

    The Lanchester prize is awarded for the best contribution to operations research and the management sciences published in English.

    Professor Chvátal and his co-authors, David Applegate, Bob Bixby and Bill Cook, have received the prize for the book The Traveling Salesman Problem: A Computational Study, Princeton University Press, 2006.

  • Oct 15, 2007 - Opening of a competition for two half post doctoral GERAD scholarships of $15000 Canadian each.
    During the 2008-2009 fiscal exercise, GERAD will offer two half post doctoral scholarships of $15000 Canadian each at the end of an internal competition. The rules are as follows:

    - Two researchers or more from within GERAD agree to back a given candidate for a one year post doc scholarship within GERAD.
    - If the candidate is awarded a15000 dollars, the researchers are committed to complementing the candidate’s salary for one year.

    If you are a Ph.D., or about to obtain it, and you are wishing to postulate for these scholarships, contact a GERAD researcher who appears close to your area of interest and expertise. If you do obtain their agreement, send your CV and copies of your publications to the researcher who will present your file, together with a letter of support to Ms Carole Dufour at GERAD.

    Closing date for receipt of candidate files is March 31st, 2008. The winners of the competition should be announced early May 2008.
  • Oct 12, 2007 - The Winter Simulation Conference (WSC) celebrates its 40th anniversary: A paper by Pierre L’Écuyer selected among thousands for the commemoration.
    A paper by Pierre L’Écuyer, Professor at the University of Montréal, Department of Computer Science and Operations Research, and member of GERAD,  has been selected  among thousands of others as a landmark paper for the 40th anniversary of the Winter Simulation Conference (WSC).

  • May 02, 2007 - GERAD post doc/undergraduate trainees competition
    The names of our winners within our internal GERAD post doctoral competition. The selection committee has declared Ms Lucia Sbragia and Mr Moustapha Aouchiche ex aequo first and the winners each of a half post doc GERAD fellowship of $15000, to be complemented by the GERAD researchers who backed their candidacy.     The Italian Society of Operations Research (AIRO) nominated Pierre Hansen foreign AIRO fellow at their annual meeting which was held in Cesena, Italy in September 2006.  It is the first time that AIRO nominates Fellows and the two others who received this title are professors Paolo Toth (Bologna) and Giorgio Gallo (Pisa).

    Maryse Labriet has been honoured an Academic Medal by the Governor General of Canada on October 17, 2005. She has been awarded the Gold Medal for her thesis entitled "Modélisation technico-économique de scénarios globaux coopératifs et non-coopératifs de réduction des gaz à effet de serre".

  • Oct 03, 2006 - Pierre Duchesne Receives the Best Paper Award Northern Finance Association
    Professor Pierre Duchesne received the Best Canadian Financial Market Paper Award for a research paper entitled Intraday Value at Risk (IVaR) Using Tick-by-Tick Data with Application to the Toronto Stock Exchange. Professor Duchesne co-wrote the article with Professor Georges Dionne, holder of the Canada Research Chair in Risk Management at HEC Montréal and Professor Maria Pacurar of the Dalhousie University School of Business Administration. The authors received this distinction at the Northern Finance Association conference, held in Montréal from September 15 to 17.

    The Montreal Operations Research Network was officially launched on May 3, 2005. In collaboration with the Université de Montréal, École Polytechnique de Montréal and HEC Montréal, the RROM gathers more than 35 professors from these three institutions who have been active in the operations research field for more than 30 years and are, for most of them, affiliated to the Center for Research on Transportation (CRT) or to the Group for Research in Decision Analysis (GERAD).

  • Aug 11, 2004 - Statistical Society of Canada: Bruno Rémillard Wins the Award for Best Article of 2003
    We want to congradulate Bruno Rémillard, a full professor with the Department of Management Sciences, who has received the award for the best article of 2003 from The Canadian Journal of Statistics, for his article entitled Nonparametric weighted symmetry tests. In the article, co-authored with Belkacem Abdous of Université Laval and Kilani Ghoudi of the United Arab Emirates University, Mr. Rémillard presents the findings of two studies, one of which examines fluctuations in retail gas prices, used to statistically validate the weighted symmetry hypothesis.

  • Jan 06, 2004 - Peter Edwin Caines elected fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2003
    Peter Caines is widely recognized for his contributions to the theory of stochastic system identification, is the coauthor of work on the adaptive control of deterministic and stochastic systems which was recognized as a seminal contribution to control theory in the twentieth century and is the author of a standard text on stochastic systems.

    His research on complex systems includes the introduction of controllability based notions of state aggregation and a generalized synchronous product for controlled automata; these ideas have yielded a hierarchical control theory for complex systems and new computational methods for their optimal control.

    Diane Riopel, professeure, titulaire au Département de mathématiques et de génie industriel, a reçu le prix Camille-Laurin de l'Office québécois de la langue française à l'occasion du gala des Mérites du français tenu en mars dernier.   • Dec 05, 2002 - Michèle Breton co-dirigera le Centre de recherche sur la e-finance
    Le Centre de recherche sur la e-finance voit le jour grâce au projet Nouvelle Économie Financière (INÉ) du CRSH.  Codirigé par M. Georges Dionne, titulaire de la Chaire de gestion des risques, et par Mme Michèle Breton, directrice des programmes de M.Sc. et de Ph.D., ce centre réunira quelque 30 chercheurs provenant de 7 universités qui se pencheront sur les enjeux de la nouvelle économie et s’intéresseront à la gestion des organisations privées et publiques engagées dans la nouvelle économie financière. Par exemple, quel sera l’impact de la e-finance sur la gestion des risques et les marchés financiers? Sur les besoins technologiques et de sécurité de ceux-ci? Les gouvernements auront-ils encore, dans le futur, le plein pouvoir de réguler les marchés? Voilà quelques-uns des objets de recherche de l’équipe composée de financiers, d’économistes, d’informaticiens, de comptables, de mathématiciens et de statisticiens.

    Soulignons que le Centre a également reçu un soutien financier de partenaires qui ont injecté ensemble 1 M $. Ces partenaires sont la Banque Nationale du Canada, la Banque CIBC, la Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, le Groupe CGI et l’Institut de finance mathématique de Montréal.

  • Oct 08, 2002 - Le prix Urgel-Archambault de l'Acfas est remis à Pierre L'Ecuyer
    L'Association francophone pour le savoir (Acfas) a décerné la semaine dernière le prix Urgel-Archambault à Pierre L'Écuyer, professeur titulaire au Département d'informatique et de recherche opérationnelle de l'Université de Montréal et membre du GERAD. Créé en 1953 en l'honneur d'Urgel Archambault, directeur-fondateur de l'École Polytechnique de Montréal, ce prix vise à récompenser une personne travaillant en sciences physiques, mathématiques ou en génie.
